Handstripping

Hand stripping involves removing the old, dead coat by hand, either using fingers or specialist tools such as a stripping knife or block, rather than cutting the coat with clippers.
Clipping cuts the hair shaft. Over time, this can soften a naturally harsh coat, reduce waterproofing and cause colour to fade. In some breeds, repeated clipping changes the texture significantly.
Hand stripping works differently. By removing the dead outer coat from the root, it allows a new harsh coat to grow through properly. This maintains correct texture, richer colour and the coat’s natural protective qualities.
Wire-haired breeds, particularly terriers, are most commonly hand stripped. Some spaniels may also benefit, especially where owners prefer to reduce excess soft coat while maintaining a sleeker, more natural outline without clipping.
Because hand stripping follows the coat’s natural growth cycle, regrowth is slower than clipped coats. This can mean longer intervals between appointments.
Hand stripping is a skilled and time-intensive technique. Pricing reflects the additional time, training and precision required.
Not all wire or spaniel coats are suitable for hand stripping, particularly if they have been clipped long term or are heavily neuter-coated. A coat assessment is always carried out before recommending this service.
